About the Club

The Geoinformatics Laboratory leverages advanced geospatial technology and data science to solve complex spatial problems.

Established in September 2023, the Geoinformatics Laboratory at Alva’s Institute of Engineering and Technology (AIET) leverages advanced geospatial technology and data science to solve complex spatial problems, bridging scientific research and policy decisions.

Mission & Vision: To monitor and protect the fragile Western Ghats ecosystems using multidisciplinary approaches that promote regional sustainability, environmental conservation, and data-driven resource management. Expanding its global footprint, the lab has actively championed IEEE GRSS activities since 2024, securing US$3,400 in grants in 2025.

Core Focus Areas include Ecosystem Monitoring & Conservation (Utilizing Remote Sensing and GIS to track landscape dynamics, land-use changes, climate variations, and environmental pollution), Biodiversity & Natural Resources (Integrating satellite imagery with ground surveys to map biodiversity hotspots, wildlife corridors, soil degradation, and watershed hydrology), and Disaster Risk Reduction (Conducting hazard zonation and vulnerability modeling for landslides, floods, and coastal erosion).

Innovation & Outreach involves AI & Next-Gen Tech (Merging classical geospatial methods with Machine Learning, UAVs, and smart sensors), Digital Platforms (Developing open-access WebGIS portals and Mobile GIS applications), and Community & Education (Serving as an experiential learning hub for students, teachers, and local communities).

Objectives

    Advance Ecosystem Monitoring: To develop Remote Sensing and GIS models that track land-use changes, environmental stressors, and biodiversity dynamics across the fragile Western Ghats.

    Enhance Disaster Resilience: To assess regional vulnerabilities and map risks for hazards like landslides, floods, and coastal erosion using predictive modeling aligned with national frameworks.

    Drive AI & Technological Innovation: To integrate Machine Learning, smart sensors, and UAV (drone) technologies with classical geospatial methods for automated feature extraction and high-resolution data collection.

    Promote Digital Outreach & Education: To deploy interactive WebGIS and Mobile GIS platforms that facilitate evidence-based policymaking, experiential student learning, and citizen science initiatives.
